Here's what's next for the Bleeding Heart

Here's what's next for the Bleeding Heart

Tomorrow, with the closing of WHAT BERNICE SEES, we'll have finished our first full season in our 118th ave home. A full season, for us, aligns with the school year (because everyone deserves summers off!)

Summer gives us some time to retool, retouch and reconfigure. This summer will bring some major Bleeding Heart upgrades, both made possible by some beautiful generosity on behalf of Daniel van Heyst and King's University, where van Heyst teaches art. So first and foremost, thank you Daniel, and thank you King's.

Our summer makeover will enable us to show more work, and to show that work more professionally.

It's Hard to Paint Walls White

It's Hard to Paint Walls White

Last month our gallery walls were every colour in the rainbow, thanks to Borys Tarasenko's bold black brush strokes and your felt pen skills. It was an awesome month. Now we have another show ahead, and there is so much work to show that we absolutely need some nice, quiet walls to start.

I'm hoping you can help.

Ni wapataenan - A New Video for We see

Ni wapataenan.

We see.

We see missing and murdered indigenous women in this country.

We see a field of bare trees hung with red dresses. We see colourful prayer flags covering those trees throughout February and into March.

We see change. We see healing and we see hope. We will continue to see. And we will act for reconciliation.

Opens February 7 at 2 PM. Closes March 5 at 3 PM.
92st and 118th ave

All are welcome.

This project has been inspired by the REDress project originated by Jaime Black in Winnipeg. Find out more about her original project at http://www.theredressproject.org

A Short Burst of Gratitude

A Short Burst of Gratitude

A busy day is waiting for me. There is not much time to write this morning before I head to an all day field trip with my daughter. In about eight minutes, things start rolling and they won’t stop all day. First, I want to pause and thank you.

Our 10 Most Popular Blog Posts of 2015

Our 10 Most Popular Blog Posts of 2015

Based on Google Analytics’ Unique Page Views (meaning actual different people who looked at the content), here are the ten most popular Bleeding Heart Blog posts of 2015.

Opening these numbers up is a little humbling for me. Many of these posts hover around 100 readers, which I realize is not a massive number. But it’s a number that has grown and will continue to grow. Especially when I watch our social media communities continue to grow. And it’s a real number, and I hope when you look at your own real numbers, these give you some perspective.

Numbers are only valuable, of course, for what they mean. What they teach us.

Give Online by Midnight Tonight for a 2015 Tax Credit!

Give Online by Midnight Tonight for a 2015 Tax Credit!

There are so many ways to make a difference in this world. We can volunteer, advocate, create beauty and pray. We can also give money. In our country, the government will often give us a tax deduction for financial gifts, too.

For those of us who care about the arts and a faith that puts love and mercy first, Bleeding Heart is one organization worth supporting.

Our Volunteers Are About to Get Some Love

Our Volunteers Are About to Get Some Love

Management of volunteers has been, well, piecemeal up until now. I’ve done what I can to connect with many of you, but there have been more last-minute ‘bail-us-out’ emails than I’d like because I haven’t been able to focus on filling shifts as much as is needed. Every once and a while, I’ve dropped a ball. Or two. Forgot to fill shifts. Double filled shifts. You, our volunteers, have been resilient. Reliable. Remarkable. You deserve better.

OPEN WALLS Covered by CBC Edmonton

OPEN WALLS Covered by CBC Edmonton

Isabelle Gallant and her team have done a wonderful job finding our most beautiful threads, and they have shared their work online. Like the best coverage, this story makes me feel as good as I ever have about what we're up to with this show. About our role in this city. About the part I get to play in all of this.

Thank you, Isabelle, for not only hearing but listening. It shows.
