These are dry times. Summer slips away faster than you can catch it – a dime down the drain. The sky hangs damp and icy today. Across the globe, powerful little men toy with the world’s future like it’s a game of chicken. Hurricanes have ravaged large parts of our earth. Families will suffer the effects for years to come. Terrorists won’t let London sleep.
This planet can get so ugly. So broken. So disordered. So many of our mirrors are shattered.
There is order in beauty. A divine order, I believe, but whatever your theology you can feel it. The affirmation of disparate parts falling into place.
Jennifer Berkenbosch’s Cultivar matters because the world needs beauty today. We need to be reminded that there is goodness. There is a solid bed beneath this wild river.
Open Walls 3 starts this Saturday, and I encourage you to show a piece of work. It has to be ready to hang, and it has to be something most families would feel comfortable viewing together (we often have kids at this show), but otherwise, anything goes. One piece for every artist who wants to submit one.

Art is a fantastic gift idea. Who doesn’t need more beauty in their life? When you give an original work of art you are giving a gift that is literally one-of-a-kind. Rather than being shelved or given away, your gift winds up on the wall, looked at daily, perhaps for years to come. I have many pieces in my home from friends and artists I know, and I think of those people nearly every time I view that work. It’s a great way to build on connections with friends and family.

It's Friday morning, and I'm wondering what help I'm going to have for the big install. Most installs are simpler than this. Maybe a dozen pieces from one artist with just a couple of variations in size and structure. Usually, artworks arrive grouped together into a cohesive vision (that is, after all, how the artist landed the solo show in the first place). This install is much harder; this is OPEN WALLS.

You might assume this a presumptuous declaration, but I know. I know because we did this last year, for the first time, and it went so very well. I have every reason to believe it will go well again this year. Seeing the creativity of so many people in one little room is awesome. See a wide range of styles and skills from a broad spectrum of artists is awesome. Thus, OPEN WALLS is awesome.

It’s Thursday, October 22. The final evening for pre-submission to OPEN WALLS, our community art exhibit.
I’ll be the second volunteer on shift today. I make it on time (for those who know me well, this is impressive), but barely. I should be early. I have the keys.
I arrive to find Lisa waiting for me. She’s not alone. A line up of four artists–canvas in hand–has formed behind her. These people are excited to share their work.
I really should have gotten here early.
