On Stepping Up My Local Arts Game (A 20 AND 17 Update)

On Stepping Up My Local Arts Game (A 20 AND 17 Update)

January. I put out a challenge. Support more local artists this year. Tangibly. With money. I’m not out to blow the bank or revolutionize the local arts scene singlehandedly. We’re going to do that together. You and me. We are going to ‘vote with our wallets’ in 2017 and see what we can do collectively for the Edmonton arts scene.

The breakdown? $20 dollars towards local arts experiences and $17 towards local arts products. Every month. That’s my goal, so what’s my reality?

Loving Local - How I’m Almost Succeeding at the 20 and 17 Challenge

Loving Local - How I’m Almost Succeeding at the 20 and 17 Challenge

Last month I put a challenge out to myself and anyone who’d like to join along (it’s never too late!). I want to support local artists in a tangible way by spending more money on their work in 2017. Not huge pile of cash, but a deliberate, reachable amount of personal patronage.

My goal is to spend 20$ on local arts experiences and $17 on an arts products, every month this year.

20 and 17 in 2017. $37 every month for a total of $444 over the course of the year. If you do this, too, we can make a big difference in the local art scene.

Instead of going to a $15 movie, go to a $15 concert.

Instead of buying a $20 poster from IKEA, pick up a print from a local gallery like SNAP or VividPrint or even right here at Bleeding Heart Art Space.

So, how am I doing? I’m getting there.

Your Time is Almost Up to Give Four Gifts at Once at OPEN WALLS

Your Time is Almost Up to Give Four Gifts at Once at OPEN WALLS

Art is a fantastic gift idea. Who doesn’t need more beauty in their life? When you give an original work of art you are giving a gift that is literally one-of-a-kind. Rather than being shelved or given away, your gift winds up on the wall, looked at daily, perhaps for years to come. I have many pieces in my home from friends and artists I know, and I think of those people nearly every time I view that work. It’s a great way to build on connections with friends and family.

Art is a great gift for the receiver, but did you know your art gift becomes four gifts?

Website Wednesday Gets You Patrons and Payments

The first step to making a living as an artist is pretty simple. People need to be able to pay you. Today, we’re going to continue adding e-commerce to an artist website with one very simple step–the Patron Button.

Art, the Market and Love

Art, the Market and Love

I need to find an artist to love today.

I need to grab an artist by the shoulders, look him in the eye and say "You are doing good work. Valuable work. Work that matters! You need to keep this up, even if the validation you think you need isn’t coming. Even if people don’t seem to get it. Even if you are not 'making it'. Yet. You need to do this work. I need it. No, really. Here, let me prove it to you."

And then I take out my wallet.
